Here in Louisiana, we are about to hit full-stride with this Fall's election season, but it appears we'll need help to get through it.
An article from the Louisiana Radio Network recently highlighted the need for part-time poll commissioners throughout Louisiana.
Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry says we have a number of poll commissioners who'd like to pass the baton to younger commissioners and pave the way for the future.
According to Landry, “Many of them are deciding to retire. They’re aging out. They’re in their eighties. Many of them are ready to just hang it up now. We need some younger people to step up and take their place.”
While helping to ensure fair elections in the Bayou State, Landry says that commissioners should understand the commitment they've made.
What Are The Responsibilities Of Poll Commissioners In Louisiana?
Landry explains, “It’s a long day. You have to be there before the polls open and stay until the end. You check voters in. You check their IDs. There are different duties. Some people check them in and have them sign the book. Others walk them to the machines. It just depends on what the duties they are assigned are.”
However, this part-time job working as a poll commissioner can be semi-lucrative. Louisiana poll commissioners will earn 200 dollars for working an election day. $150 for working on an Early Voting day.
