A living testament to that note is the monster fish caught by local angler, Eddie Hyatt, Sr. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from Cross Lake. Unless there's something terribly wrong with the scales used to weigh this beast, she weighed an incredible 15.24 pounds.

As you read through the comments on the Facebook posting about the fish, you'll quickly note that this was not an "Official" weight on the fish and because of that, will likely never be listed in the record books. However, that doesn't negate the fact that this would certainly be the largest bass ever brought in from Cross Lake and would be among the largest bass ever caught in Louisiana.

The author of the post stated that the fish was caught around 7:40 pm and because of the late hour and the fact that the fish was full of eggs, Eddie decided it was best if she was quickly returned to the water, so indeed, for the safety of the fish, he likely forfeited any recognition by the record keepers. You have to admire his selfless decision for that.

The overall largemouth bass record in Louisiana is held by Greg Wiggins who caught a 15.97 pounder on Caney Lake in February of 1994. The number two slot is held by Regina Womack, who reeled in a 15.87 pound bass from Valentine Lake in May of 2010.

If Eddie had weighed this fish on official scales, it would be only slightly out of Louisiana's Top 10, landing just below Johnny Harper's tenth place fish weighing 15.33 caught from Caney Lake in July 1996.

Leading the charge with Louisiana record fish is Caney Lake with five of the top 10. Next is Bussey Brake with two. Also listed are Valentine Lake, Black Bayou Hosston and Baton Rouge University Lake.
