Shreve Memorial Library is presenting a program later this month called 'People and Homes of Antebellum Caddo Parish.'

Librarian Joe Slattery will give the history of 16 existing homes and buildings built in Caddo before the Civil War, along with a biographical sketch of the original owners, during a slide presentation. He'll also hold a Q-and-A session afterward.

The event runs from 2-3 p.m. Friday, June 17, in the meeting room of the library's Broadmoor Branch on Captain Shreve Drive.

Here's more about Antebellum Architecture, courtesy of Shreve Memorial:

Antebellum architecture refers to the large, elegant plantation homes built in the South before the American Civil War. Antebellum means "before war" in Latin.

It’s not a particular style home, but a time and place in history. The features we associate with Antebellum architecture are grand, symmetrical, and boxy, with center entrances in the front and rear, balconies, and columns or pillars.

This architecture style was introduced to the American South by Anglo-Americans who moved to the South after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Most Antebellum homes are in the Greek or Classical Revival, or Federal style architecture.
