Louisiana's own Senator John Kennedy is the chairman for the 75th annual Mystick Krewe of Louisianians Mardi Gras celebration in Washington D.C.

What is Washington Mardi Gras?

According to the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians website, they've been celebrating in our nation's capital since 1944. It says, 'With 100 years of Mardi Gras history in their Louisiana heritage, it was inevitable that those displaced Louisianians living in our nation's capital would want to bring the celebration to their new home, where there was a thriving Louisiana State Society of 400 members.'

Wow! I had no idea and according to their history, the celebration would have gotten started in 1938, but the festivities were canceled with no explanation.

How do you become a member of the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians?

Becoming a member is as easy as applying on their website. Annual dues are $800 and tickets to each event are $350 per person. They don't list any qualification for membership but I don't doubt that potential recruits are screened. They do reference a wait list for membership, so...

When I was chatting with my friend Suzanne Ellis not long ago, she mentioned that she and her husband were returning to celebrate Mardi Gras in Washington D.C. again this year. As a fan of all things Carnival, my ears perked up! I, of course, asked her to send pictures and keep us updated on all the fun. Well, last night was the first day of the festivities and she came through! She even had pictures from the disco party last night hosted by our contingent from the Shreveport-Bossier City area.
