Fired Shreveport Firefighter Wins Reinstatement After Drug Test Dispute
A fired Shreveport firefighter wins his battle after a lengthy discussion before the Shreveport Police and Fire Civil Service Board. City officials were reprimanded for not supplying documents to the firefighters legal team in a timely manner. The documents were subpoenaed by the civil service board and on at least 3 occasions, the city did not meet the deadline for complying with the subpoena.
Fire Chief Clarence Reese Jr. tells KEEL News firefighter Zachary Fox was called in on a random drug test and he failed the test. He had been driving a fire engine in his role with the department. Fox was subsequently fired. In the documents he provided in his defense, Fox claimed his urine sample was tampered with, but there was no direct evidence of that.
But after the dust settled, Fox was given his job back with full pay on a 4-3 vote of the board. Chief Reese was visibly upset after the ruling and he told KEEL News he was ordering another drug test for Fox immediately.
In another case, Shreveport Fire Captain Felicia Scroggins was given another 180 days of leave to recover from an April surgery. She has also been battling the city over discrimination claims.
Scroggins also tells KEEL she is being interviewed for a job as a training officer in the department, but says she was just informed it now includes a physical agility assessment. She says "they know that I am currently injured, under medical restrictions, and recovering from surgery." And she says these physical tests have not been required for this position until now.
