The Shreveport Zoning Board of Appeals has voted unanimously to ok a variance request from Curtis 50 Cent Jackson and his G-Unit group for the large sphere structure planned for downtown Shreveport.

Where Will This Domed Structure Be Built?

The project will be located in the 300 block of Spring Street at the northeast corner of Spring and Travis. It is being developed by G-Unit Film & Television Louisiana. Kevin Bryan Architect applied for the zoning variance for this project.

Bryan told the board this is a request for a sign variance. The dome can use the LED screens to broadcast messages and videos. He says the primary purpose of the dome is for entertainment. He says all of the signs are programmable and the brightness can be controlled depending on the time of day. He also says the city will be able to post announcements on these LED screens.

What Is the Zoning Variance Request?

The planning documents show this domed structure will need exceptions to the sign restrictions currently in place in Shreveport. This request includes a variance for dimensional requirements for the screens that will light up the sky and for advertisements that might be shown on the domed structure.

What Will This Structure Be?

This project is a large-scale entertainment venue shaped like a dome. It will be 140 feet tall. The outside wall will feature LED panels capable of projecting messages including photos and videos on about 90,000 square feet of surface area. These panels will likely display a mix of on-site content, advertising, and other visuals.

One of the concerns brought up by ZBA Chairman Bernie Woods was about the signs causing a distraction to motorists. Bryan told the board no one has expressed a concern about this issue. He says this dome is a great fit for the downtown entertainment district.

No one came forward to speak against this application.

The Zoning Board of Appeals has agreed to allow the variance finding the proposal is compatible with the surrounding Downtown Entertainment District.

While the MPC has granted this variance, developers must still secure all required permits and approvals before construction the work can get started.
