Dierks Bentley was hanging out with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and was kind of enough to perform an acoustic version of his hit "I Hold On." The country singer also explained how we wrote the song and what it's about.

Bentley explained how the song started in his mind as a tribute to his father and some of the things they loved together like an old truck. He went on to say that he wanted to also make the song about his love for his wife. Somewhere in the middle of all those ideas, a beautiful song came together.

I'm always interested in a songwriter's process. I have several friends that are songwriters and what I gather from them is that there is no formula for writing a great song and each of them has a different way of doing it.

Another thing I can tell is that the best songs come from a special place in someone's heart. That is the case for "I Hold On."

P.S. My cousin Pauline is absolutely in love with Dierks Bentley. I expect she'll make her way up from Lafayette to see him at the Horseshoe Riverdome in May. Hi Pauline! Stop being weird.
