Gov. John Bel Edwards is calling on state lawmakers to report for a special legislative session to address the looming fiscal cliff.

The session--aimed at adjusting the state's budget to avoid a $1 billion budget shortfall for the fiscal year beginning July 1--will begin on February 19.

The governor said he would decide by today whether or not to call the session that--for the most part-- is due to an expiring one-cent sales tax.

The governor's office has been at odds with Republican lawmakers over what options the state can take to fill the budget gap. Edwards said he is flexible on ideas to close the budget gap, but he remains steadfast against a long-term renewal of the one-cent sales tax--an idea the GOP legislators were pushing for this week.
