Despite TOPS Cuts, More Students Are Going to College in Louisiana

Despite cuts to TOPS funding, more students are going to college in Louisiana this year than last. Many had fear that the cuts would cause students to abandon Louisiana schools. However that's not the case. In fact, many schools set record enrollment numbers.

Centenary saw their largest number of new incoming students since 2011. LSUS saw a 24 percent jump in enrollment. Northwestern and Grambling's enrollment grew by 7 percent. Louisiana Tech saw the smallest increase at 1 and a half percent.

LSU school system president F. King Alexander says that the numbers show people understand the value of getting a college education. Alexander went on to say they're looking to see the trend continue, telling KTBS "We're hoping that more and more will stay in state and we're working with high schools and other entities that make sure they stay in state and we attract some of the best and brightest out of state."
