UPDATE:

The Bossier Sheriff's Office issued this statement late Friday night:

At the request of the Office of Homeland Security, Bossier Sheriff’s detectives assisted federal agents with an investigation of Bossier Schools Superintendent Scott Smith.

Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington wants to emphasize the investigation is under the direction of the Office of Homeland Security.

Early Friday morning, rumors started to fly around Bossier Parish that something was happening with Bossier Schools Superintendent Scott Smith. As people started asking questions about Smith, a press release was sent out by Bossier Schools that indicated Smith had been hospitalized. The release read:

"We are saddened to have learned Bossier Schools Superintendent Scott Smith was hospitalized overnight.

While it is a personnel matter and we will not compromise his privacy, the Bossier Parish School Board asks that you keep Mr. Smith and his family in your thoughts."

However, late this afternoon, KTBS reported that Smith had become the target of a federal investigation, and that his hospitalization came after he was contacted by federal agents.

Smith has not been arrested, and no charges have been filed.

Authorities are reportedly investigating Smith for shipments of controlled substances that had been ordered online, and delivered from foreign countries. The report includes the suggestion that the controlled substances were anti-anxiety medications.

Sources tell KEEL News that Smith's resignation is imminent, and Mitch Downey would take over in the interim. Downey is currently the Assistant Superintendent. Not official word has been released on Smith's position.
