In a notice from the City of Bossier City, we learn that this year’s memorial to honor Law Enforcement Officers that have died in the Line of Duty, will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, May 14th, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Court of the Bossier City Civic Center at 620 Benton Road.

Memorial Day Actually Began As Decoration Day And Started Just After The Civil War

This ceremony, which falls squarely in the middle of Police Week, which continues through Friday May 16, precedes this year's actual "Memorial Day" which is coming on Monday, May 26.  According to pbs.org,

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868

That first "Memorial Day" was dedicated to those lost during the Civil War and while we certainly want to remember all those members of the US Armed Forces that we have lost, we should also pause in remembrance of those who gave their lives here on the home front.

In a report released in January of this year by National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund we see that across the country, 147 federal, state, county, municipal, military, tribal, and campus officers died in the line of duty in 2024.

Locally, we not only want to remember those we lost over the past year, but all of those selfless public servants that put themselves in harm’s way and lost their lives in the line of duty to keep us safe.

This Memorial Event is open to the public and the cities and Parishes of Bossier, Shreveport, Caddo and surrounding agencies will take part in this ceremony. Both, Bossier City Mayor Chandler and Shreveport Mayor Arceneaux will present a joint proclamation for this event.

Of the event, Bossier City Police Chief Daniel Haugen said that “this Memorial Service is our way to show our commitment that we “Will Never Forget” the price that these Officers paid for their communities.
