According to the website, catholic.com, Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of the forty day Lenten season, is coming very shortly on February 18.

Lent will then continue through Thursday, April 2, ending the day before Good Friday. Easter will then follow on Sunday, April 5.

On Ash Wednesday, and each Friday during Lent, members of the Catholic faith are required to abstain from red meat.  This leaves fish as one of the main options for meat lovers.

Thank goodness that in our neck of the woods, Catholics and anyone else who's craving the absolute best fried fish, are blessed with some of the greatest options on Earth.

We all know that it's almost impossible to beat the fried fish you get from your own backyard or from the porch at a friend's house; especially if that friend lives on the lake!

There's something mesmerizing about running those crappie filets through a heaping helping of corn meal and then watching them float around in a bath of peanut oil until golden brown.

Throw in corn fritters, fries, fried okra and a big onion and it's a hard meal to forget.

However, not everyone is invited to your house. And while I long for the long, lost days of Cypress Inn on Cypress Lake and Kool Point on Caddo Lake, there are still some pretty good alternatives in and around the Shreveport/Bossier area for those that didn't make your fish-fry guest list.
