The events of this story actually took place back in 2009, but apparently the hospital involved managed to keep a lid on things until now as the "Syracuse Post-Standard" newspaper dug up a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report about what went down.
On October 16th, 2009, 41-year-old Caroline Burns of Syracuse, New York tried to kill herself by overdosing on painkillers and muscle relaxants. She was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse.
Over the next few days, she was in a deep coma and completely unresponsive. Doctors determined she'd suffered irreversible brain damage, and her family decided to take her off life support and donate her organs.
Well, as Caroline's body was lying on the operating table, just as doctors prepared to harvest her organ's, Caroline woke up!
Though the hospital had obviously made some major errors, Caroline and her family decided not to sue. After an investigation, hospital officials decided the drugs had caused her totally unresponsive state and slow brain activity . . . which the doctors mistook for brain damage. The hospital was fined $22,000 for the near miss.
Note to our families. Because both of us are organ donors; please double check to make sure we are actually DEAD before harvesting our organs.
