While I was checking out the latest news about road conditions around the nation, I found the roads in Louisiana were the 9th worst in the nation. That’s actually better than I expected.

But it got me to thinking. Why do we have to get our cars inspected every other year to drive on roads that aren’t up to par? I’m not alone in that thinking. State Rep Larry Bagley of Logansport has been trying to do away with inspection stickers in the Bayou State, but so far, he has been unsuccessful.

How many states still require inspection stickers and of those, how many of them have substandard roads?

States that Require Annual Inspection Stickers

  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Maine
  • North Carolina
  • New York
  • New Hampshire
  • Massachusetts
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

States That Require Inspections Every Other Year

  • Delaware
  • Illinois
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Nebraska
  • Rhode Island

When you compare these requirements with road conditions, you will find Rhode Island still requiring inspections even though they have the worst roads in America. West Virginia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey also have some of the worst roads in the country but you still have to get those cars inspected to drive on substandard roads.

California also has massive road needs, but still require emissions testing for all cars.

Bagley questions the usefulness of requiring the inspection sticker and thinks it might be more about the revenue the state generates from the fee. I would suggest doing away with the inspection sticker and shift that fee to your license plate or driver's license fee if the state must find a way to keep the revenue.
