FGL’s Tyler Hubbard Taught Granger Smith His Onstage Secret: Go Shirtless!
Fans who've seen Florida Georgia Line in concert are familiar with Tyler Hubbard's signature move of tearing off his shirt at the end of the show and tossing it into the crowd. Now, Hubbard is giving former tourmate Granger Smith a piece of the lady-pleasing pie, suggesting he do the same.
Smith was opening for the duo on their 2016 Dig Your Roots Tour when he learned Hubbard's show-stopping move. The two met through a friend of a friend — Hubbard is a fan of Earl Dibbles Jr., who is Smith's alter ego — and wanted to meet the budding star. The two would work out together while on the road, with Hubbard advising to Smith that tearing off his shirt would help motivate him to exercise.
"He said 'Granger, if you take off your shirt every night at the end of the show, it keeps good accountability for when you're working out,'" Smith recalls, doing his best impression of Hubbard in a chat with Taste of Country Nights. "And he's kind of right."

While on the road, Smith and Hubbard co-wrote a song called "Happens Like That" which became the lead single off Smith's new When the Good Guys Win album.
The "Backroad Song" singer says that the album theme was inspired by the rough stage fall he suffered in December of 2016 that resulted in two broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung and multiple weeks recovering on the couch. "That injury really made me want to focus on all we have is today. We only really have today, if we don't enjoy today and get the most out of today, there might not be tomorrow and there's no worse regret than that," he says.
When the Good Guys Win is available now.
