A Shreveport teenager had quite a good run at the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. 13-year-old Sahil Thorat was knocked out in the 8th round of this grueling competition. The 8th grader from Caddo Middle Magnet School was sponsored by Louisiana State University Shreveport.

This was his 2nd year at the national competition. He finished 49th last year. Thorat did much better this year. He finished in a tie for 12th place and made it to the later rounds on Wednesday.

He also correctly answered questions about a person who is hapless and what a hermitage is (a private retreat). Another question he correctly answered was a person engaging in obliquity is being deliberately: indirect.

What Word Knocked Him Out of the Bee?

In the 8th round, Thorat was given the word moviola. He incorrectly spelled it movieola.

Nayara de Silva-Ahmed of New Orleans was knocked out in the 2nd round.

Rishaan Reddy of Baton Rouge missed a word and was out in the 4th round.

Kai Richardson from Lake Charles missed a question and was out in the 5th round.

Aiden Pham of Lafayette misspelled a word and got the boot in the 6th round.

Thorat was the final Louisiana student in the running going into the 7th and 8th rounds.
