Shreveport Snow Storm of 2021 Started One Year Ago Today

Weather was the focus of our world this time one year ago. Snowmageddon started on February 14, 2021 as winter precipitation moved into Louisiana and the ArkLaTex.

The Shreveport metro got more snow and ice than we have ever seen before. Shreveport got more than 8 inches. In a normal year, we get about an inch of snow.

I will never forget that week. 3 of us stayed in a hotel right down the street and we would trek back and forth to the station to work and cook meals. But on Wednesday night of Snowmageddon week, the radio station lost power and we had to resort to truck stop food which consisted of Slim Jims and bananas. Yummy.

This massive blast of snow and ice essentially shut our city down for a week. For many others it lasted longer because much of Shreveport was without water. Most local businesses were forced to close and it was tough for work crews to get out an keep the roads opened. Even I-20 had a blanket of snow and ice on it for the entire week.

What Temperature Records Did We Break?

Shreveport broke a record on Tuesday, February 16th when the temperature dropped to 1°F. Records were also broken in Tyler, Texas (-6°F) and Longview, Texas (-5°F). Both cities broke their all-time record lows for any date.

How Much Snow Did Shreveport Bossier Get?

If you will recall, the snow started on February 14 and it continued moving across the Shreveport Bossier metro. In Bossier Parish Plain Dealing got 5 inches of snow.

In Caddo Parish, Mooringsport got 6 inches of snow, Ida got 8 inches and 5 inches of snow was reported in Belcher.

But we had another wave of ice and snow over the next two days. The National Weather Service describes this as Winter Storm #2.

In Bossier Parish, 3 inches of ice fell in Bossier City. Benton got 2.5 inches. In Caddo Parish, Shreveport got 2.5.
