If your social media feeds look anything like mine right now, they are probably flooded with pictures of cute kittens. It is officially peak puppy and kitten season in the Ark-La-Tex.

Around Shreveport, that means many of us are performing the annual ritual of tapping on our car hoods before cranking the engine, just to make sure a stray kitten hasn’t crawled inside to escape the heat.

But behind those cute social media photos lies a harsh reality, and a heartbreaking announcement from an East Texas cat rescue in Tyler serves as a grim warning for what could easily happen in our own backyard.

The O’Malley Cat Rescue recently announced a complete intake shutdown due to overwhelming numbers and severe volunteer compassion fatigue. In a raw social media post, they shared the exhausting reality of hitting maximum capacity with over 150 cats, begging the public to take personal responsibility. "We are tired, and we are sad," they wrote.

It is a disheartening message, but it's exactly the future Shreveport could face if we don't actively fight pet overpopulation.

Fortunately, we have an incredible local weapon to prevent our community from reaching that breaking point. Robinson’s Rescue in Shreveport has performed over 100,000 surgeries, working tirelessly to keep our local pet population under control.

The nonprofit offers low-cost spay and neuter rates to all pet owners, regardless of income:

Male Cat: $38

Female Cat: $48

Male Dog: $58

Female Dog: $68
(Note: There is a $10 additional fee for a rabies vaccine at the time of surgery).

Even better, if you live in Caddo, Bossier, DeSoto, Natchitoches, Sabine, or Webster Parish and meet specific income thresholds, you may qualify for completely free surgeries and rabies vaccines through their SSNIP program. Let’s protect our community and our local rescues. Schedule an appointment today.
