Shreveport Loses Jobs from October – But Better than Last Year

Louisiana continues to gain jobs. New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows more residents of the Bayou State are now working. But Shreveport has lost some jobs from October to November.

Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Cates says the unemployment rate in November was 3.3%. This is the sixth month in a row the state has either tied or set a new record low.

How Are Louisiana's Biggest Cities Performing?

• Alexandria (63,000 jobs) added 200 jobs from October 2022 and gained 1,300 jobs from November 2021.

• Baton Rouge (401,500 jobs) added 500 jobs from October 2022 and gained 4,000 jobs from November 2021.

• Hammond (46,900 jobs) added 200 jobs from October 2022 and gained 1,100 jobs from November 2021.

• Houma (81,300 jobs) added 100 jobs from October 2022 and gained 2.700 jobs from November 2021.

• Lafayette (203,400 jobs) showed no change from October 2022, but gained 5,200 jobs from November 2021.

• Lake Charles (101,800 jobs) added 800 jobs from October 2022 and gained 1,900 jobs from November 2021.

• Monroe (76,200 jobs) added 300 jobs from October 2022 and gained 700 jobs from November 2021.

• New Orleans (564,100 jobs) lost 1,000 jobs from October 2022, but gained 21,900 jobs from November 2021.

• Shreveport (175,700 jobs) lost 700 jobs from October 2022, but gained 2,000 jobs from November 2021.

The state also sets a new record low for non-seasonally adjusted unemployment, which reached 2.9%. That month-to-month jobs count, which includes seasonal and temporary work, set records in three categories—the unemployment rate, the number of employed, and the number of unemployed.  She says all of those mean good news for employers and those seeking jobs. Cates says jobs are being added in all corners of the state and in all parts of the economy.

Cates adds "major industries statewide are maintaining a steady increase in job creation and opportunities for Louisianans. Our continued efforts to put Louisianans to work have been successful. This is a testament to LWC's efforts and partnerships with our industry partners and stakeholders."

She says there are many employers creating jobs and there are more than ten thousand openings on the workforce commission’s web page, and the state has programs to help employers and people looking for work.

She says job seekers who are looking to upgrade their skills can get free training on the Workforce Commission website.

• Construction gained 3,400 jobs from October 2022.

• Education and Health Services gained 1,300 jobs from October 2022.

• Financial Activities gained 600 jobs from October 2022.
