The Caddo Parish Coroner's Office has identified the woman who was attacked and killed by two pit bulls in Shreveport.

Authorities say 64-year-old Geraldine Hamlin was mauled by two pit bulls at approximately 10pm February 27th. The attack happened at her home in the 2900 block of Seventh Street in north Shreveport. Hamlin was rushed to Ochsner LSU Health, where she died from her injuries early the following morning.

Very few details about the circumstances of the mauling have been made public. Authorities have not indicated if the pit bulls belonged to Hamlin, or if they were being housed on her property. This also means that if they were not Hamlin's, what charges could be brought against the owner of the dogs.

Statistics show that the vast majority of fatal dog attack in the United States come from pit bulls. From 2005 to 2017, in 65.6% of all fatal dog attacks in the US, pit bulls were responsible. More than 50% higher than the second most prolific killer, Rottweilers who were responsible for 10.4% of fatal attacks.

In 2018, the most recent research available, pit bulls were responsible for 72% of fatal dog attack in the US. No other breed broke 10% in 2018. Also in 2018, only 6% of fatal dog attacks resulted in meaningful criminal charges.
