Below is a news release from the Shreveport Fire Department about the incident:

Shreveport fire crews were dispatched to a report of an apartment fire in the 3500 block of Cedar Creek. According to SFD Communications Officers, the call was received at 9:11pm.

At 9:17 pm the first fire unit arrived to report: “nothing visible” SFD fire crews immediately discovered that someone had barricaded themselves inside the apartment and would not come out. SFD immediately moved to a safe location until Shreveport Police Department could secure the scene. Once the scene was deemed safe fire fighters moved in, performed a quick search and extinguished a small fire. One male occupant was found inside the apartment and was pronounced dead on scene.

It took 9 fire crews (approx. 29 firefighters) along with Shreveport Police to bring the situation under control.

SFD Fire Investigators along with Shreveport Police Detectives are trying to determine the exact cause of the fire and death. The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office was also on scene, which is required for all fire fatalities. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office is responsible for body recovery and death investigation. The name of the deceased is withheld at this time pending notification and verified identification.

An SFD Chaplain was on scene to assist the family. There were no injuries to firefighters.

Shreveport Police sent out this statement about the incident early today:
An investigation is underway by Shreveport Police detectives following a standoff at a Shreveport apartment complex Monday evening. According to a news release from Shreveport Police:
Just after 8:23 p.m., on August 5, 2019, Shreveport Police patrol officers arrived at the Cedar Creek Village Apartments located in the  3500 block of Cedar Creek Drive.  Officers were responding to report of shots fired inside an apartment building.  As officers gathered additional information on scene, it was alleged that a 26 year old white male had fired a rifle inside an apartment and subsequently barricaded himself inside a room within the apartment.  Moments later, it was believed the man began to set fire to items inside the room, causing a smoke detector to sound.  Fire crews from the Shreveport Fire Department arrived on scene within minutes to extinguish the fire; however initial efforts were stalled due to the volatile situation unfolding inside the apartment.
Members of the Shreveport Police Department's Special Response Team and hostage negotiators were dispatched to the scene in efforts to bring to situation to a close.  Following multiple failed attempts to contact the man inside the apartment, police SWAT team members made entry into the apartment, followed by SFD fire crews, who were able to quickly dispose of a small fire, which did not spread to any additional units.  Once inside the apartment, a deceased male was located inside.  The cause of death was not immediately known.  Officials with the Caddo Parish Coroner's Office arrived to take custody of the remains.  An autopsy is scheduled in the matter.
