Best Homemade Hummingbird Food Recipe for Shreveport Residents
The hum is back! As the temperatures finally start to climb in Northwest Louisiana, one of the most exciting signs of spring is the return of our tiny, high-energy neighbors.
Hummingbird season is officially here, and while we all love hanging those feeders and watching the blur of wings from the porch, there is a serious side to hosting these little guys that many Shreveport residents don’t realize.
Did you know that we accidentally harm, and even kill, local hummingbirds every single year? It’s a heartbreaking reality, but most of the time it happens because of simple mistakes we make with their food. Luckily, our friends at the LSU AgCenter are stepping in to make sure we keep our local bird population thriving and safe.
The "Two-Ingredient" Secret
Forget the store-bought mixes. The LSU AgCenter says you can make the perfect, safest nectar right in your own kitchen with only two ingredients. All you need to do is bring water to a rolling boil and mix 1 part white sugar with 4 parts water. It’s that simple.
However, there are a few "absolute nos" when it comes to the menu. Avoid using honey, brown sugar, or artificial sweeteners, as these can be incredibly dangerous and even toxic for the birds. Also, it’s time to skip the red dye.
While we used to think they needed the color, the red dye can actually be harmful. If you want to attract them, just use a red feeder! The natural color of the plastic is more than enough to grab their attention without the chemical additives.
The Maintenance Move
Cleanliness is everything. As the Louisiana heat kicks in, that sugar water can turn into a breeding ground for mold and harmful bacteria faster than you’d think. Remember to clean your feeders and replace the nectar often, ideally every few days, to prevent your backyard sanctuary from becoming a hazard.
Grab the sugar, ditch the dye, and let's give these hummingbirds the "guilt-free" fuel they need for the season!
