While Louisiana might get a lot of things wrong, when it comes to the senior hunters of the Bayou State, there is an obvious effort to extend respect and courtesy.

In the new Louisiana 2025-2026 Hunting and WMA Regulations guide that was just released a couple of weeks ago, senior hunters were delighted to see that one of the Major Changes For 2025-2026 Hunting Regulations was a type of privilege extended to those hunters 65 and older.

In the slight chance you didn't catch the new regulation regarding deer hunting in Louisiana, it reads, "Hunters 65 or older may hunt deer with any legal weapon during the Primitive Firearms Season in each deer hunting area."

Until this year, senior hunters were required to adhere to the same rules as all other hunters during this special Primitive Firearms Season, but now Louisiana's senior hunters will be afforded the right to use their "regular" weapon of choice for harvesting deer.

For those wondering when the 2025/2026 Primitive Weapons Firearm Season will be held here in Area 2 of Northwest Louisiana, LDWF has set those dates for October 18 through October 24, 2025 and again from January 12 through January 18, 2026.

Louisiana has always been great to extend privileges to our Youth and Veteran hunters in the form of special deer seasons, and though this isn't any type of "special season", the right to hunt with any legal weapon during the Primitive Firearms Season is certainly an advantage to Louisiana's hunters who are 65 and over.

Those Louisiana hunters, who are 60 years of age or older, are already given another sign of respect in the form of a huge reduction in the price of hunting and fishing licenses.

As the photo above illustrates, those senior hunters (60 and over) can purchase the Senior Hunt/Fish license for only $5.  And for any hunter born before June 1, 1940 the hunting/fishing privilege for Louisiana residents is absolutely free.

As one of those "older hunters", thank you Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries.  We really appreciate your respect and kindness!
