Secretary of State Tom Schedler has resigned from office. He sent a letter to the Governor announcing his resignation effective Tuesday, May 8, 2018.

This was just released by Schedler’s office:

According to Article IV, Section 16 of the Louisiana Constitution, if the unexpired terms of a statewide elected official exceeds one year, the First Assistant Secretary of State (Kyle Ardoin) fills the unexpired term of office. The Governor calls a special election to fill the vacancy at the next regularly scheduled congressional or statewide election. The next available dates are the Mid-Term Congressional Elections scheduled for November 6, 2018 and December 8, 2018.

Here’s part of the letter sent to the Governor:

”It is now time for me to make a difficult choice in the best interest of my family, my staff and the citizens of this state. Effective Tuesday, May 8th, 2018, I will resign as Secretary of State. However, I leave office with a heavy heart knowing I have disappointed the people in my life who care for me the most.”

The resignation comes as he faces a sexual harassment lawsuit from an employee who said she received unwanted advances, sexually charged emails and gifts.
