The Louisiana Department of Treasury recently announced they will be publishing their latest list containing over 62,000 names of Louisiana residents that are owed unclaimed funds totalling more than $44 million dollars.

If you check the website you'll see names of citizens who are owed money by the state for a myriad of reasons.  Common examples of unclaimed property include things like uncashed payroll checks, stock dividends, unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and utility deposit checks.  State Treasurer John M. Schroder encourages all Louisiana citizens to check the printed list for their names.

“It is our job to return this money to its rightful owners, and we are constantly getting new money in,” said Treasurer Schroder. “Between financial woes and the rising cost of everyday needs like groceries and gas, finding your name on the list could be a welcome surprise at a crucial time. That’s why I hope every Louisianan pauses to check for their name and the name of their friends and loved ones.”

When checks go uncashed, or if accounts go dormant, or if the company cannot locate the owner, those funds are then sent to the Louisiana Department of Treasury for safekeeping until the rightful owners can be located.

Businesses are required by Louisiana State law to report all unclaimed funds to the Treasury if they are unable to locate the owners of the money.  The Treasury is then required by law to publish the names of individuals annually for whom they've received unclaimed funds for the preceding year.

If you'd like to find out if you have unclaimed funds, it's free to check for your name on the website LaCashClaim.org.
