Can You Drive With AirPods in Louisiana? Laws & Fines
I know I can’t be the only one who pops their AirPods in during the morning routine and completely forgets they’re even in there. For me, it’s all about pure convenience. I get my alerts delivered straight to my ear, hear my text messages read out loud, and can dictate a reply on the fly without ever breaking focus on whatever project is sitting on my desk. It feels like having your own personal assistant on standby.
Then lunchtime rolls around, I jump into my truck, and head out to grab a bite. With both earbuds in, I’m totally hands-free, so I must be the smartest driver on the road, right?
Well, not quite. While it feels like a totally harmless habit, driving with both AirPods in could actually land you a ticket. With Louisiana’s stricter distracted driving rules fully kicked into high gear, a lot of local drivers are asking the same question: Is it actually legal to drive while wearing noise-canceling earbuds?
Last year served as a graceful "warning phase" for Louisiana’s updated Hands-Free driving regulations (Act No. 288). But now, those friendly warnings have officially turned into real fines. While the crackdown was primarily designed to keep people from holding their phones while behind the wheel, it brought an old, often-overlooked headphone rule back into the spotlight.
Under Louisiana Revised Statute (RS 32:295.2), operating a motor vehicle while wearing a full set of headphones or earbuds in both ears is illegal. State law specifically defines headphones as anything that covers or inserts into both ears, noting that blocking out ambient road noise creates a major safety risk for everyone on the road.
There is a silver lining, though. The law explicitly states that any listening device inserted into or covering only one ear is completely fine to use at any time.
So, what's the bottom line for your daily commute across Northwest Louisiana? If you’re caught cruising down the highway with both AirPods in or a pair of over-the-ear Beats on, you’re looking at a fine plus court costs.
Keep one ear free so you can hear sirens, horns, and traffic, and keep your hard-earned money in your pocket!
