Legendary Shreveport Landmark Restaurant Razed
Time marches on... the only thing constant is change... and so on. I was reminded of those trite sayings when I drove by the old George's Grill location on East Kings Highway recently and saw a big empty.
It was sad enough when George's, as it was more commonly known locally, closed their doors back in April of 2017. Then, last April, a fire damaged the building, apparently beyond repair. More than two dozen units from the Shreveport Fire Department and Shreveport Police Department responded to the call that came in just before 3P that afternoon.
Locals remember that eating at George's Grill meant George Casten was there. From the earliest morning breakfast crowd, and through the legendary daily lunches, you'd always find George, clad in his white apron, manning the ship.
Every time I drove by the vacant building, even after the fire, I held out a little hope that maybe someone would buy it and reopen the old gal. But, like so many of our beloved, local haunts of the past, like Murrell's, Nanking, Clancy's, Brocato's, Sansone's, Cypress Inn, Smith's Cross Lake Inn, Don's Seafood.. the list goes on and on... sadly, George's is now permanently on that list.
I know things change... I know time marches on... I know the only thing constant is change... but I can be nostalgic, and not just a little bit sad, about it.
