Louisiana has always been a breeding ground for professional athletes. Doesn't matter if you're talking about the NFL, MLB or NBA. We lay claim to all-time greats like Terry Bradshaw, Robert Parish, Mel Ott and countless others. Which is pretty awesome because you can't have a conversation about the best without mentioning Louisiana. It's virtually impossible.

However, there is a downside. With so many legends and greats hailing from Louisiana, there's a bunch of guys that overlooked and forgotten. Which is unfortunate. Just because these guys aren't 'Hall of Famers', don't mean they should be overlooked. Guys like Joe Adcock deserve as much recognition as Lee Smith or any other Hall of Fame caliber player.

Joe Adcock is a Louisiana Legend

Joe Adcock is a MLB legend from Coushatta, Louisiana. And sadly, unless you're a hardcore Braves fan, you probably don't remember the name. It's not because Adcock was a bad player. He, unfortunately, was overshadowed by two of his teammates that were absolute monsters of the game - Hank Aaron & Eddie Mathews. He also played in an era with some all-time great first basemen including Gil Hodges and Ted Kluszewski. Heck, we can't even call him Louisiana's "Home Run King" as Mel Ott beats him in that department.

Not saying that if he was on another team, he would been a Hall of Famer or anything. BUT, he definitely would have gotten more recognition both during and after his playing career. On pure stats alone, Joe finished his career with 336 Home Runs and 1122 RBIs. Also, at the time of his retirement, he had the third highest fielding percentage by a First Baseman in MLB history. So, the guy could hit and play the field.

Did You Know Louisiana's Joe Adcock Once Held an MLB Record?

Again, Joe Adcock was a great player. Here's a fun fact for you. He only played for the Braves for 9 years. He ranks 3rd in Milwaukee Braves history in hits, home runs, RBIs and total bases. Again, hard to beat Aaron & Mathews, but he's right there with them in the record books.

Here's another fun fact about Joe Adcock. He actually set one MLB record and tied another. He set the record for most total bases in a game on July 31, 1954 with 18 total bases. That record stood for 48 years, until getting broken by Shawn Green in 2002. In that same game, he became one of 7 players in MLB history 4 home runs in a game. And he just barely missed a 5th, when he banged one off the top of the wall.

Joe Adcock's Post Career Honors

While Joe never won an MVP award - his highest finish was 8th place in 1954 - and he never made the Baseball Hall of Fame, he did earn at least a couple of post-career honors. He was voted into the Braves Hall of Fame and the Milwaukee Walk of Fame at American Family Field.

He only made 2 All-Star games during his career. He never won an MVP. And he's rarely remembered as a great player, even though he was.

This Coushatta native was a legend and an all-time great..
