In 1942, Bing Crosby and Irvin Berlin recorded and released the song "White Christmas," which was about one man's hope to see snow on Christmas day. In Shreveport, there's always been an unlikely chance that you'll see a White Christmas, but how unlikely is it for snow to fall on Christmas day down here?

  • Shreveport has only seen snowfall 7 times since 2019
  • Shreveport once already had a White Christmas
  • Did you know Shreveport once had 22" of snow?

The south isn't where you'd go first if you're trying to find a serene winter climate, instead down here for the winter you'll find temperatures that only kiss the below-freezing line and plenty of rain, just like we have year-round in Louisiana.

On rare occasions, Shreveport and other parts of Louisiana have actually experienced snowfall during the winter (thankfully only in the winter). According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, a White Christmas is defined by a snow depth of at least 1 to 2.5 c.m. (0.39" to 0.98") on Christmas Day.

Looking at the previous years of snowfall in Shreveport the snow only came after the new year began, the first snowfall of 2021 came in January, and there would be a few more short snow showers in February of the same year, and again it wouldn't be until the next year snow fell again in February of 2022.

This data seems to show that it's not likely that Shreveport will get to enjoy Christmas Day as Bing Crosby sang about it so many years ago, but one time a long time ago Shreveport actually got a White Christmas.

All the way back in 1929 Shreveport saw what might be its first and last White Christmas. Between the 21st and 22nd of 1929, there was a record-setting, and yet to be broken, 11 inches of snow. The snow stayed on the ground and melted down to about 0.1" of snow on Christmas Day.

1 to 2.5 centimeters of snow? Check.
Shreveport had its own White Christmas in 1929.
