Update: Caddo Student Struck by a Car Getting on School Bus
A teenager was struck by a private vehicle early Tuesday morning on Milam Street near Exposition Ave. while trying to board a school bus. The teen was crossing the street from the Villa Del Lago apartments when he was struck by a Chevy Avalanche.
The 17 year-old male student suffered a broken arm. Emergency services were called, and the student was transported to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Police reports indicated that the student was standing on the sidewalk waiting for the school bus. As the bus came to a stop, the driver of the Chevy Avalanche tried to go around the bus, ignoring the flashing lights and flashing, extended stop signs on the bus, striking the teen.
The driver of the Avalanche was subsequently cited for several violations, including:
- Passing a Stopped School Bus
- Reckless Operation of a Vehicle
- No Insurance
- Expired Driver's License
This case is still ongoing and still under investigation. The Shreveport Police Department released a statement saying:
The Shreveport Police Department would like to remind all motorists that school buses create unique traffic conditions that must be respected. When buses are stopped to pick up or drop off children, drivers must remain vigilant and follow all traffic laws. Children are watching for their buses- drivers must watch for the children.
