Violence in Shreveport is nothing new. The city approached a record number of homicides in 2021, before dropping 43% in 2022. Those numbers were 83 homicides in 2021, and 43 homicides in 2022.

However in 2023, the city has once again approached record pace multiple times. Since those moments of "record pace", the city has slowed down in the numbers of homicides. But that doesn't mean there isn't an alarming number of killings in the city.

In all of 2022, the city had 43 homicides. By June 1st, 2023...the city of Shreveport has already reached 32 homicides. Putting the city very close to the total number of last year's homicides. However, while still an alarming number, the pace is slower than the record setting trajectory the city had earlier this year.

Right now, if Shreveport kept the same pace through the rest of the year that we have seen through the end of May, the city can expect another 44 homicides this year. If the current average stays at that level, it would mean 76 homicides for the year. That would be above the 2022 total, but below the 2021 total.

The striking difference with this year's total is that multiple of these homicides are the result of officer involved shootings. The Shreveport Police Department is responsible for 3 of the 32 homicides. Now, those homicides may be ruled justifiable, but they still remain homicides.

As of June 1st, 2023, here are the homicides that have occurred in the city of Shreveport:

Shreveport Homicides in 2023

Homicide describes a person killing another person. That doesn't always mean it was a crime. Justifiable Homicides do exist, and will be counted on this list. These are violent killings, not necessarily murders. Murders are recognized as a crime, unlike all homicides.

Who Has A Higher Crime Rate: Bossier City or Shreveport?

These measurements are from the latest FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data from both Shreveport and Bossier City. The latest release for the pair was from 2019. While Shreveport has continued to release FBI UCR data, Bossier City has not released information since. Using the per capita measurement to fairly assess the populations of each city, here are the crime rates per 100,000 residents in both Shreveport and Bossier City for each UCR Violent Crime statistic.
