When you get auto-billed for your streaming services this month, check your bill. Because if you're in Louisiana, you'll notice its higher than you're used to.

As of January 1st, 2025, Louisiana residents must now pay sales tax on their streaming services. But not just any sales tax, the highest sales tax in the nation. This isn't just for one type of streaming service either; not just for Netflix, or Disney+, or Prime video...ALL of them will have a 10% price increase. Minimum.

That's right, all of your streaming services will go up at least 10%, through sales taxes.

If you have 5 streaming services that average $10 each, that means another $5 will be put into your streaming charges for the month. If you have more accounts, or they're more expensive, obviously those taxes will increase.

This is all part of Governor Jeff Landry's new tax plan. These changes were part of the new tax package passed during a special session in the Louisiana legislature last year. Governor Landry signed the package into law in December, and they went into effect on January 1st. Meaning your first bill of the year will include the 10% increase.

The charges may not be limited to standard streaming services either. WBRZ-TV reports that Cox has sent an email to subscribers to let them know they will see the increased tax. They told customers the increase will appear under "Taxes, Fees, and Surcharges" on their bills.
