Arrest Warrant Issued In Elderly Couple’s $61,000 Bank Account Theft
The Shreveport Police Department are asking for help in an ongoing financial investigation. Authorities are working an active case after an elderly couple lost funds to a caregiver.
SPD Detectives with the Caddo Shreveport White-Collar Crimes Task Force discovered $61,000 missing from the victims' bank accounts.
The probe launched on August 4th, and focused on unauthorized bank access. Investigators found at least 61 ATM withdrawals of $1,000 each, with surveillance video directly linking the caregiver to several transactions.
Who Are Shreveport Police Looking For As Their Suspect?
The Caddo Shreveport White-Collar Crimes Task Force has secured arrest warrants for Latoya Chalmers. The warrants were issued after a lengthy task force investigation. During police interviews, Chalmers admitted to making the withdrawals...but claimed the money served as authorized payment.
That claim has been disputed by the victims, who stated she only had permission to purchase groceries and medication. Investigators spoke with a family friend, who refuted the compensation claims, leading Judge Chris Victory to sign the arrest warrant on October 7th.
What Are The Penalties In Louisiana For These Crimes?
Chalmers faces charges for Theft and Exploitation of Elderly Persons or Persons with Infirmities. Under Louisiana law, Felony theft over $25,000 carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
State statutes treat financial exploitation of the elderly as a severe offense. A conviction can result in 10 years of additional prison time. Police ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers...callers remain anonymous.
