‘In God We Trust’ Sign Now Required in Louisiana Classrooms
SHREVEPORT, LA - A new sign will soon have to be posted in all Louisiana classrooms. All Louisiana K-12 public schools and colleges or universities are required to hang a sign which says “In God We Trust.” This is now required in every classroom in the state. Previously it was required to be posted in each school.
Governor John Bel Edwards has signed the measure which requires at least a paper sign of some sort with that phrase. The signs can be donated to the schools.
The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and University Systems will set up the rules for these displays. The law does not specifically say where in the classroom the sign must be posted. The law also does not outline how big the sign must be.
Ironically, this bill was sponsored by State Rep Dodie Horton of Haughton. She watched as several of her spending measures were killed by her fellow lawmakers when she did not vote to raise the spending cap. Some have been saying the Governor might veto some of her other bills. But he has signed this one.
This measure goes into effect August 1 of this year.
Last week, the Governor also signed a measure that lets public high schools teach an elective course on Bible history and literature.
