Last week in Downtown Shreveport, a train jumped the tracks and rolled over. Even though the title seems frightening, it really wasn't that drastic. Still a sight to see, and cause a lot of headaches in the area.

BUT, how serious could it have been?

I don't want to downplay the fact that there are a lot of 'worse case scenarios' around this kind of thing. But the odds are actually in our favor.

Because a lot of these train cars are built REALLY well, we don't stand a strong chance of this going into emergency alert territory. I mean, if you think about the amount of trains that we already see pass through, and the very small percentage that go through something like this, the odds are already low.

When you add into the equation the strength of the materials involved here, the percentage drops to a number that we don't need to be worried about. The train companies will always need to be aware of this type of situation, that's their job. But us, as the general public, can't spend our days worried about these type of events, or we'll never get anything done.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the story last week, was an episode of Mythbusters.

In the episode, the guys tried to implode a train tanker. Which took them a lot of work to make happen. Which leads me to believe that these tankers aren't just going to implode, or explode, over something small. Granted a train tipping over isn't small, but I hope you know what I mean.
