When 19-year-old Santino William Legan opened fire on Sunday (Jul. 28) at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California, three people were killed and a dozen more injured. However, according to a musician playing at the event, things could have been a lot worse if the police weren't on top of things in a split second.

According to TMZ, artist Tommy Huxley played Sunday at the festival with his band, Tommy Huxley's Blues Avenue. When the first shots were fired, his band was busy breaking down their equipment.

"Basically I had a guitar cable in my hand, and I heard fireworks," Huxley told TMZ. "It sounded like fireworks going off and I hesitated for a while. And I saw everybody run, and then I heard more firecracker sounds, and basically I was in denial. I didn't know what was happening."

Huxley was still thinking the strange noises were fireworks when his fiancee urged him to run. "Let's go, everybody go," he described her command. "We basically went right around the corner and we saw four officers."

The officers questioned Huxley about the shooter's appearance and whereabouts. He was unable to give much information, but noted, "These were the officers that took the suspect down, I think, so I just want to thank them.

The shooting brings back memories of the Oct. 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting, where more than 50 people were killed when a gunman opened fire on a country music festival. Jason Aldean was on stage at the time, but dozens of artists and crew members took cover as police closed in.
