If you know me, you know I have a deep appreciation for our local food scene, and that definitely extends to where I source my meat. What originally started as a total obsession with Chop Shop’s legendary smashburger eventually turned into a regular habit of picking up delicious, locally raised meats for my own kitchen.

Every time I drop into a local spot, I find myself checking out the more unique offerings in the display case, things like elk, bison, or rabbit. But after seeing a recent update from a favorite local farm, I think it’s officially time for all of us to step outside our comfort zones and give our standard steak obsession a little break.

Haughton’s own Mahaffey Farms recently took to Facebook to share an important message about the state of local agriculture:

"Beef is in short supply nationwide. The American cattle herd numbers are at a record low. We are running low too. We need time to grow our herds back! American ranchers are the toughest and most resilient people on the planet. But that doesn’t change the amount of time it takes to grow a heifer or a steer. For us it’s about three years. Obviously, we love to see the public buying real local Beef. But also an increased demand for local beef doesn’t help in the short term if we are low on supply. We will recover, but please be patient. For small diversified farms like ours it would be very helpful if the public would support us by purchasing our Pasture Raised Pork, Chicken, and local Bison."

If you haven’t visited Mahaffey Farms, they are a fantastic regenerative family farm located right down the road at 4851 Highway 80 in Haughton.

They specialize in grass-fed beef alongside pasture-raised pork, chicken, eggs, and local bison—all available at their farm stand or online.

Another incredible local option is Chop Shop SHV, located at 724 Azalea Drive in Shreveport.

As a highly popular, family-owned whole-animal butcher shop and restaurant, they carry a wide array of locally sourced meats, including products from Sample Farms and other regional producers.

Supporting local agriculture isn't just about buying beef; it's about backing our farmers through every season. Next time you're planning dinner, consider swapping your go-to cut for pasture-raised pork chops, local bison burgers, or fresh chicken. It’s a delicious win-win for your dinner table and our local ranching community!
