Every year, we celebrate this incredible culinary creation on the first Friday of June. And while any day would be a great day to enjoy this magic in a box, this particular occasion was originally established to honor the Salvation Army Lassies. Those were the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

According to nationaldaycalendar.com, "In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home-cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops. The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.”

Since its humble beginnings, the popularity of doughnuts has exploded to the point that they've almost become a "food group" of their own.

Of course, since there are so many styles and flavors of doughnuts, they've sparked many heated debates.  Which is better? Chocolate or glazed? Jelly-filled or Boston Cream? Cake doughnuts or Beignets?

According to several surveys on the issue, plain glazed donuts rule the donut world and it's not even close with as many as 60% saying "glazed" is their personal favorite. That's especially true in Louisiana and for the entire Southern and Midwest regions.
