Now that it seems we are finally starting to gain a little headway in terms of Louisiana's vaccination rate (as of September 24th, 2021 it is officially 44.89%), it might just be time to line up for another shot.

I thought I was done with 2 shots!

According to the new guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a COVID-19 booster shot for the Pfizer vaccine has been approved and is suggested for some at-risk adults.  That means that not everyone needs or even qualifies for this extra layer of protection.

How do I know if I need to take a 3rd shot?

According to the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), there are 3 types of people that qualify for Pfizer's booster shot.  Obviously, you will have had to have received the first 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.  If that's you, you'll want to schedule your vaccination appointment if you are:

  • Age 65 or older
  • Age 18 or older and have one of many underlying medical conditions
  • Age 18 or older and live or work in a setting that places you at risk of being exposed to COVID

I think I need the booster, how do I get it?

If you want the extra protection this booster is said to provide, you'll have to schedule an appointment.  Pharmacies like CVS are offering the shot to those who qualify, and had the first two shots at least 6 months ago.  You can also schedule an appointment to get your booster through Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport here.
