For me, it's always a great time to get together with friends and go try our luck at a little video poker. I realize it's not a game for everyone but the way I look at it, I've got a chance to spend a few hours, have a good time, and actually walk away with more money than I walked in with.

I think the key to any form of gaming is knowing the rules of the game, having knowledge of the basic strategy of the game, and the most important rule, knowing when to leave. Most of us screw up that last one and we stay a few dollars too long.

Since our Louisiana Legislature wasn't able to really do anything with the larger issues looming across our state they were able to make some changes in our video poker rules. There are many parishes that allow video gaming at truckstop casinos, horse racing and off-track betting venues, and other smaller establishments that meet the requirements set forth by law.

The changes agreed to by the legislature and the governor won't affect the way the games are played, the payouts, or even when you can and can't play. They only affect your ability to wager more conveniently. Up until this legislation was passed the largest bill a player could insert into a machine was $20.

This new legislation allows for Louisiana video poker machines to begin accepting $50 and $100 bills. This will help customers who come into play from having to make change for a larger bill. I know, it's a small inconvenience and who knew there was a law needed to make that change. The new rules go into effect on August 1, 2017.

I guess that's Louisiana. Making sure that the fun and games are always a priority. Good luck and play responsibly if you choose to play.
