Is TikTok More Reliable Than Yelp for Finding Good Restaurants?

Before trying a new restaurant, millions of Americans pull up Yelp or Google reviews to see what people are saying. Me? I’m going to be completely honest with you, I am not that person. I’m the one who will spend an hour falling down a rabbit hole watching food videos on TikTok or Facebook before I ever look at a star rating.

But whether you're scrolling videos or checking star ratings, can social media and online reviews actually tell you if a restaurant is safe to eat at?

I have always used my own foolproof method right here in Shreveport-Bossier, I ask the soda delivery guys. If you ever want to know how clean a kitchen really is, find the local Coke or Pepsi delivery guy and ask them if they’d eat there. They see the back of the house, the loading docks, and the storage rooms every single day. If they won’t touch the food, you shouldn't either!

It turns out science is finally catching up to the "soda guy" method. New research published in Marketing Science looked into whether crowdsourced online reviews can actually predict if a restaurant is safe. The answer? Yes and no.

The study found that online reviews are great for spotting the obvious stuff, like pests, spoiled food, or a dirty dining room. But they consistently fail to detect the hidden food safety violations that are most likely to actually make you sick, simply because regular customers can't see what's happening behind closed kitchen doors.

While some people think online crowd feedback can replace expert health inspectors, the study proves we need both.

Reviews are great for a quick red flag, but trained inspectors are the only ones who can uncover the hidden risks. Interestingly, the researchers also noticed that restaurants with higher visibility online tended to have fewer visible violations. It turns out that knowing the public is watching actually encourages better hygiene!
