It’s no secret that Shreveport breweries are the perfect place for food trucks and local concepts to thrive. And what makes a great brewery even better? Delicious, locally-brewed beer paired with incredible food.

Great Raft Brewing has recently given us all a compelling reason to adjust our dinner routines. They just welcomed CalTex Barbecue as their new, permanent spot to grab a bite.

I was there for the tacos. I’d heard rumors that this barbecue spot was making divine tacos using homemade tortillas, filling those warm pockets of goodness with their scrumptious, smoky barbecue. I’ve always wanted to try those viral barbecue joints that incorporate Mexican flavors, and little did I know, we have that right here in Shreveport!

The Perfect Pork Belly and the Best Mac in Town

Let me tell you, CalTex Barbecue is serving up one of the best tacos in town. The Pork Belly Taco is pure perfection. They keep it beautifully simple and delicious, with a fresh-made salsa cruda and cotija cheese that sends it over the edge. Honestly, that pork belly is so good, it can stand completely on its own.

But hold up, this place might just have the best mac and cheese in town. I love a fresh-made mac and cheese, and this is it. They smoke five different cheeses for a whopping eight hours before making the cheese sauce.

The mac and cheese is actually made in small, consistent batches to guarantee that gooey goodness every time. The smoky flavor is present but subtle, it doesn’t overpower the richness. How come nobody told me about this cheesy masterpiece and that pork belly taco? These two items alone justify a visit!

The full menu is vast, too. From the delicious elote (corn in a cup) to the smoked turkey dipped in a unique sauce that tasted like a hot jam-barbecue fusion (I don't know the official name, but it was fantastic!), the food was excellent across the board.

CalTex Barbecue was formed by two close friends who simply love smoking meat. What started as weekend pop-ups, catering events, and call-in orders has blossomed into a steady dinner service at Great Raft Brewing.
