[ORIGINAL STORY]  Close friends of Barrett Lovell say the Bossier sheriff's deputy passed away this morning after a year-long battle with cancer.

Barrett had recently returned to work after undergoing a cord blood transplant. His fight with leukemia began in October 2014. He was 33, and would have turned 34 next month.

“We have such a caring community, and there were so many people who supported and prayed for Barrett during his battle with cancer,” said Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington. “Please continue to pray for his family and loved ones left behind. We don’t always understand God’s plans, but we will surely miss Barrett and his great big smile. Rest in peace, Deputy.”

Here are a few updates friends and family had been sending out via Facebook:

Update: There have been several people asking how Barrett Lovell is doing. His wife, Sherry made the announcement last week that he had relapsed. I just let the hospital and she asked if I would update everyone.

Barrett is currently in ICU in Shreveport. He currently has pneumonia in both lungs and is on a ventilator. They are giving him medication to keep him sedated as well as pain medication. There is a concern that he has congestive heart failure due to the amount of fluid on his body, so they are keeping a close watch and giving him diuretics.

Though he does need a blood transfusion, they are holding off until they are able to get some of the fluid decreased. If you would like to help, please consider donating platelets! He is having to receive platelet transfusions due to some bleeding issues.

If you would like to donate platelets, please call LifeShare Blood Centers and schedule an appointment. It takes a little longer than blood and can only be done on a specific machine in the blood center. We want to make sure they have a bed reserved for you!
