Does it seem like the lines between politics and entertainment are more blurred than ever before? It does to me.

In the news recently, we've seen two ex White House staffers names being floated around as possible cast members for the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars. We've heard rumors of Kid Rock running for Senate and even Cynthia Nixon from Sex and the City has had her name connected with a possible bid for the governor's office in New York.

I'll be the first one to say we've had some good leaders come from the world of entertainment in the past. Who can forget Ronald Reagan, Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger? Depending on which side of the aisle you sit on, they all had a degree of success in the political arena, but I'm not sure it should become the norm.

Sure, celebrities have been able to use their influence in the past to help worthwhile causes. Just look at Angelina Jolie's work with the United Nations or Brantley Gilbert and his support of our veterans, but what does an actor or singer really know about day to day governmental operations?

We've seen plenty of entertainers spout off about politics. Natalie Maines, anyone? How about Madonna saying she'd thought of blowing up the White House at the Women's March on Washington?

I'm not going to share my personal political opinions here on immigration or healthcare, but I am going to tell you that I have a healthy amount of skepticism when it comes to celebrities embracing politics and running for office. Celebrity by it's very nature is the first sign that a person isn't grounded in reality. It's hard to remember what it's like to make ends meet when you have a driver and a Bentley. How does an entertainer truly understand the ins and outs of applying for government assistance or what it's like to actually punch a time clock? I'm not saying what they do isn't worthwhile, but I am saying that their everyday existence doesn't look like mine or yours. They just can't relate to our everyday needs and concerns. The struggle is definitely real. I guarantee they don't have a pile of clothes waiting to be put away or a floor that needs swept. They have people for that, which brings me to my next point.

They have people for that. They have to insulate themselves from the general population for their own protection. But isn't the first thing that a representative of the people should be is not only approachable, but available? Sure, there are gate keepers in politics but in my eyes, it's not quite the same.

Finally, I don't want our government turned into anymore of a circus than it already is. It's time to kill the special effects and get down to business. I pray that all of our leaders use their power and influence that is given to them by the people for the good of the whole and approach their office with a servant's heart.

These were just some of my musings on the way home from work today. Do you think we should embrace celebrities as politicians? I don't know about you, but I want someone I can relate to and who has been where I've been and has seen what I've seen. I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments below!
