Another special session begins Monday at 4pm and lawmakers are trying to come up with solutions to solve the state's budget crisis. This is a do or die session as the new fiscal year begins July 1 and the budget mess has to be solved before then.

The budget the Governor has signed, cuts the TOPS program by 30% and it also includes drastic cuts to the SNAP program and higher education. Several lawmakers are standing firm and do not plan to support extending any part of the temporary sales tax while others want to find a compromise.

Some House Republican leaders have supported extending one-third of the expiring 1 penny sales tax. If this measure passes, the state sales tax rate would go from 5 percent to 4.33 percent on July 1. Senate leaders want to pass a measure to keep one-half of the expiring tax hike, putting the sales tax rate at 4.5 percent.

Governor John Bel Edwards issued this statement: “A clear majority in the Legislature wants to put our state’s budget challenges behind us, but were blocked in the last special session, we have one more opportunity to get this right for the people of Louisiana."

This special session must end on June 27th by 6pm.
