Sheriff Steve Prator Responds to ‘Slavery’ Backlash
Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator is being criticized across the nation for some of the markets he made about criminal justice reform.
It seems to have started with this Tweet from Shaun King:
In 38 seconds Steve Prattor, Sheriff of Caddo Parish in Louisiana, tells you why he REALLY likes keeping “good” Black men in jail. pic.twitter.com/7YtxixE1rU

That Tweet has been shared thousands of times and is continued to be shared. I spoke with Sheriff Steve Prator this morning about this social media firestorm and he did tell me he’s getting numerous calls from national media outlets including the New York Times, Reuters and many other national media outlets. He tells us some of the reports are so outlandish. “I don’t want this to cause me to lose my focus of running the sheriff’s office.” The Sheriff is planning to issue a formal written statement later today. It’s been so crazy, that Caddo Parish Government issued this Tweet earlier today:
is a separate entity from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Ofc. & provides no oversight over sheriff or his office. — Parish of Caddo (@ParishofCaddo) October 12, 2017
And that’s just the beginning of the Twitter storm. The story is being reported by media outlets across the nation.
WOW! Can this man even hear himself? This is the Sheriff in Caddo Parish. How can anyone defend the use of forced prison labor to try to halt criminal justice reform? pic.twitter.com/FvYKl6Pjrc
