With all the farmers' markets we have in our area, it's only fitting that there's a National Farmers Market Week.

It's set for August 2-8 and this is the 16th year residents can celebrate the benefits of their local farmers markets.

"It's important to support your farmers markets because it's a great way to buy fresh, Louisiana-grown fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat products, among other things," said Louisiana Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain in a news release. "It's a way to visit with our local producers and support the local economy, not to mention all the added health benefits of buying fresh food."

LDAF has again secured a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to participate in the 2015 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, allowing senior citizens to buy locally-grown foods at farmers markets and roadside stands. Seniors who applied for the program this year have until November 30 to visit their local farmers market or roadside stand to utilize their vouchers.

We have several markets in the Shreveport-Bossier area. The Bossier Farmers' Market opens for the first time tomorrow at 9AM in front of Pierre Bossier Mall.
