A newborn baby who was born--then abandoned--in a Wal-Mart bathroom is in critical condition, while her mother will be spending time behind bars.

Police have arrested a woman who allegedly gave birth in a New Roads Wal-Mart bathroom and abandoning the newborn in a trash can.

Our news parters at KATC reported 36-year-old Kyandrea Thomas was arrested around noon today after she was located at Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary.

At approximately 8 p.m. Friday, New Roads police and firefighters responded to the Wal-Mart after an employee, who was taking out the trash, found the abandoned newborn in a plastic bag.

Firefighter were able to revive the baby before she was taken to Pointe Coupee General Hospital. Medics then airlifted the baby to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in stable but, critical condition.

Thomas' criminal rap sheet also includes charges of negligent homicide in connection with the death of three-year-old Damiyn McElveen.
