This past Saturday night Coach Les Miles did something he had said many times he wouldn't do. He benched starting quarterback Brandon Harris. When you consider how poor the LSU offense performed Saturday night with Harris at the helm Miles really had no choice. The team had 13 total yards in Harris' two series.

Enter back up transfer Danny Etling and for at least one quarter the Tigers looked a lot closer to what the fans had been expecting. While Etling's entry in the game did seem to spark the offense his performance was not epic or legendary. Still it was good enough to create a bit of a controversy at the quarterback position.

The obvious question is which signal caller will start Saturday's conference opener against Mississippi State? Coach Miles is remaining tight lipped on that information. Whether his reason is to keep the Bulldogs guessing or to avoid some serious mind games among his own team he won't reveal that information until later this week. Perhaps we won't know who will start for LSU until just before kickoff this weekend.

During his conversation with the media on Monday Coach Miles addressed the play of Etling.

Danny has a nice rapport with his teammates, and I think he's an asserting guy. I think he wants to make plays for them. I think everybody rooted for him as he took the field.

He also expressed a bit of surprise at Brandon Harris' struggles on the field.

I would've predicted that he would have started very fast. I'd have predicted that. I would have said that he's going to come out the gate fast.

The Tiger offense has been anything but quick out of the gate this season. That unit has failed to score any points in the first quarter of either game they have played this season. The team has even scripted and rehearsed the first few plays of each game yet the execution has not been apparent.

This Saturday night LSU will open conference play against Mississippi State. State has had their own struggles this season losing their opener to South Alabama and defeating South Carolina this past Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 PM at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.
