LSU versus Mississippi State in baseball. If there is a better college baseball rivalry in the country I would like to know what it is. Since the rivalry between the two schools in football is more like a rivalry between a hammer and a nail (LSU being the hammer), Bulldog fans hold tightly to their Diamond Dogs especially when they play the Tigers.

Tiger fans have learned through the years that what State lacks in football they more than "bring it" when it comes to baseball. The mutual respect between the two schools and the two programs is actually one of the finer displays of sportsmanship on the NCAA level that I can recall.

It's not surprising that these two perennial powerhouses would be meeting on the last weekend of the regular season to decide a conference division championship. Last night in game one of the three-game weekend series it was LSU prevailing by a score of 3 to 1.

The Tigers can clinch the Western Division of the SEC crown tonight with a win over the Bulldogs in Starkville. You can bet the crowd will be raucous and the infamous Left Field Lounge will be full of well-lubricated State fans perhaps for one of the last times. It should be a great college baseball game. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.

Yes there will be trash talking, yes, there will be some gamesmanship but in the end, any good play made by either side will be wildly applauded and at the end, the teams and the fans will shake hands and congratulate each other on a game well-played.

Now that I've said that both benches will probably clear in a brawl that will make headlines across the nation.
